The Brabant regional party Lokaal Brabant will not participate in the elections for the Lower House on October 29. That is the outcome of a general members’ meeting in Chaam on Saturday. The members find the preparation time short.

If a majority had been before, Lokaal Brabant would have made an attempt to get into parliament. Chairman John van Gorp of Lokaal Brabant had previously indicated that the members were informed about this plan. “The members think it is too short a day to prepare an election program and a qualified electoral list,” said John van Gorp, chairman of a meeting in Chaam. According to Van Gorp, there has been a desire within the party to go to The Hague for some time to look after the Brabant interests there. However, the elections of October 29 will come too early, according to the members. The Frisian party FNP is participating in the national elections for the first time.

“It is a shame that the members find the preparation time too short to participate in the upcoming parliamentary elections,” responds party leader Hubert Koevoets. Earlier he had argued full of fire to participate in the national elections as a Brabant party. “I am not disappointed, because it has also become clear that the next time there might be a chance to try it. We know that the wish lives with a number of people within Local Brabant. But we are a party ‘from the bottom up’, so our members determine. And that has now happened. The party is not going to participate, is the conclusion.

To assure
Henriëtte Thijsen from the Land van Cuijk expressed her concerns during the meeting. “I also think it is important that Brabant is well represented in the Lower House, but to participate in its own list in October is not realistic. The preparation time to come up with a good list is far too short, and moreover we are all very busy with the preparations for the municipal elections in March.” Henriëtte represented 13 of the 50 votes against participation in the national elections. At the vote there were 24 votes before participation, but that was not enough.

Cooperation
Lokaal Brabant is a collaboration between Brabant local parties. Since 2014, the party has been participating in the provincial elections. In the Senate, Lokaal Brabant, together with other regional parties, is represented by OPNL, with one seat. Lokaal Brabant is currently also supplying one deputy in the Brabant board.

In the most recent provincial elections in 2023, Lokaal Brabant won two seats in the Provincial States. With nearly 46,000 votes, that was the best result so far. That is by no means enough for a seat in the Lower House. In the previous elections, a party had to get nearly 70,000 votes for that.
