The Brabant song ‘Christmas in Zeeland’ has unexpectedly become a hit in the province of Zeeland. The song was made by the band Het Kwartjesvolk and is about the Brabant village of Zeeland. This year the Zeelanders have adopted the song. This year the song is a newcomer in Omroep Zeeland’s Christmas Top 30.

The song caught the attention of presenters from Omroep Zeelandwho put the song on the voting list. Then the votes poured in. From Brabant, but also Zeelanders voted en masse for the song. “It’s about the spontaneity in Zeeland and how warmly we live together,” says songwriter Tini van Schijndel.

And that fits in well with Zeeland, according to the Zeeland broadcaster. “Although the song is not about the province of Zeeland, there are lyrics similarities. Namely atmosphere, conviviality, a good glass of wine, candlelight and a Christmas party that is worth having,” says radio presenter Elias den Hollander of Omroep Zeeland.

Warm atmosphere in the village of Zeeland
Writer Van Schijndel says that he wrote the song in 1997 and it is about the warm atmosphere in the village. When asked why the Zeelanders have not heard of the song or the band before, he says: “We are not professional, we do it for fun and have a lot of fun doing it.”

In the village of Zeeland, Van Schijndel sometimes comes across people from Zeeland who come to see how things are going in Brabant. “But there are also a lot of drivers who have to be in the province of Zeeland. They are disappointed, because then they have to drive a little further,” says Van Schijndel.
