Boygenius wear drag outfits live as a protest to the anti-drag law

The three musicians wanted to take a stand against Tennessee Governor Bill Lee and his anti-drag law.

Boygenius made a statement against Tennessee Gov. Bill Lee’s anti-drag law at their show in Nashville, Tennessee on June 25. Phoebe Bridgers, Lucy Dacus and Tennessee native Julien Baker took the stage in drag makeup and costume. “Today, I’m so thankful for my life, not because I’m on stage with my best friends…but because I’m content with who I am,” Baker said during the concert. “I want you guys to shout loud enough for Governor Lee to hear you.” Boygenius then led a “Fuck Bill Lee” chant.

The law that Boygenius were protesting placed severe restrictions on drag shows in the state of Tennessee. In June 2023, the draft was declared unconstitutional. After Yo La Tengo, James McMurtry, Sheryl Crow and many others, Boygenius now joins the artists who spoke out against the draft and the governor responsible, Bill Lee.

The three musicians also shared their drag names at their June 25 show. These would be Queef Urban (Bridgers), Lucille Balls (Dacus) and Shanita Tums (Baker).

More about Boygenius

The supergroup is coming to Germany for two concerts in August. On August 15th she will stop at the Verti Music Hall in Berlin and on August 16th at the Palladium in Cologne.

For Phoebe Bridgers, Lucy Dacus and Julien Baker, THE RECORD is the next step up from 2018’s self-titled EP, which marked the indie group’s debut release. When it was created, they placed great emphasis on the participation of women in production. The band name is also an allusion to the male domain of indie rock and the music industry in general. When they formed in 2018, Boygenius reacted to the artificially longed-for rivalry between them, as they were often compared to each other as “women of rock”.
