Butscher’s debut ends bitterly
Despite an early opponent’s own goal and an almost 80-minute lead, VfL Bochum missed out on their first win of the season. In the first and probably only game under interim coach Heiko Butscher, the Westphalians took the first point in a 1-1 (1-0) win over 1. FC Köln, but the result was for VfL because of Linton Maina’s late equalizer (88th). but again a disappointment.
Bochum had lost the first six games and then parted ways with promotion coach Thomas Reis. After the early mishap of Benno Schmitz (9th) with Maina’s first competitive goal for FC, Cologne prevented them from going into the international break with two defeats in a row. After that, things continue to be challenging with duels against Borussia Dortmund and in the derby at Borussia Mönchengladbach.
At VfL Bochum the search for a new head coach continues. Sports director Patrick Fabian had confirmed “initial talks” with candidates before the game, but wants to continue to have Butscher look after the team for the time being. “Heiko did great this week. And will continue to do just as well for the time being.” However, the 34-year-old did not want to reveal more. The requirement profile is more complex than can be presented in a few seconds, said the former Bochum defender.
