Boats made of recycled plastic: foundations happy with subsidies for sustainable projects

The province is again offering subsidies for small-scale projects. Foundations can use that money for sustainable projects. Scouting Ensign Peetoom Vendel from Hoorn used the subsidy to build sustainable boats made from recycled plastic.

The scouting association received the subsidy in 2021, but the impact of the money is still significant. “Thanks to the subsidy, we were able to develop and build our first boat,” says Chris Seggelink, chairman of scouting Vaandrig Peetoom Vendel.

The scouting club has already made four boats. The club receives help from the foundation Clean 2 Anywhere. A foundation that, together with people who are at a distance from the labor market, makes boats from recycled plastic.

“Because we spend less time maintaining the boats, we have time for fun things”

The boats are made from recycled plastic, which means they require a lot less maintenance. The club is very happy with that.

“Because we spend less time maintaining the boats, we have time for fun things,” says Chris. The boats do not need to be painted. That saves a lot of work, materials and volunteers.

“We try to teach sustainability to children in a playful way”

It was not difficult to get the subsidy. This project is exactly where the subsidies from the province are intended, says Chris. “It is a sustainable project, and that fits well with scouting. We try to teach sustainability to the children in a playful way.”

Subsidy

The scheme has been in place since 2020. The province has again made 25,000 euros available for this year. Only foundations, associations and educational institutions are eligible for the subsidy. A maximum of 5,000 euros can be requested per project and the amount requested may not exceed eighty percent of the total costs of the project.

Subsidies can be applied for until October 31 of this year.
