Bird flu is transmitted by wild birds, among other things. The virus that causes the flu has been circulating in Germany, the Netherlands and France for a long time. Infected wild birds that fly over can also increase the number of infections in our country. The virus can also be transmitted through direct contact with sick animals or contaminated material, such as manure or dirty crates.
“People and mammals in general are not very susceptible to bird flu, but caution is advised,” says Mieke Steensels of Sciensano. “Anyone who goes for a walk with their dog should also ensure that their pet stays away from sick or dead birds.”
