BIJ12: Seven cubs seen with a wolf pair in the Drents-Friese Wold

The wolf pair in the Drents-Friese Wold has had seven new cubs this year. This is evident from the latest progress report from BIJ12.

The seven cubs can be seen on images from a wildlife camera, reports the national service that determines and handles wolf damage.

The wolf pair that lives in the Southwest Drenthe and Southeast Friesland region had three cubs in 2022. One of them was shot dead in Wapse on July 9, the other was hit by a car near Hoogersmilde. The only remaining yearling still lives in the pack.

Ooststellingwerf

The DNA of one or more members of this pack was found 19 times on damage cases between May 1 and August 1, reports BIJ12. Reports came from Friesland of a total of 35 dead sheep and goats from Appelscha, Boijl and Elsloo.

All three places are located in the municipality of Ooststellingwerf. The city council decided on Tuesday evening that the municipality will send a letter to the European Commission about the wolf. President Ursula von der Leyen had asked scientists and local governments to submit updated data on the wolf population and their impact by the end of September. The European Commission is reviewing the protected status of the wolf.

20 wolves

In total, there are currently at least 20 established wolves in the Netherlands. At least 39 cubs were born last year. Seven packs have their territories on the Veluwe, the other two packs live in Central Drenthe and the Drents-Friese Wold.
