Last year finalist Arminia Bielefeld once again caused a surprise in the 1st main round of the DFB Cup and defeated Werder Bremen.
Second division Bielefeld won 1-0 (0-0) against Bundesliga club Bremen. Isaiah Young, who had played for the second team of Werder from 2017 to 2020, achieved the winning goal for Bielefeld in injury time. In the previous season, the Arminia had defeated Bremen as a third division club and came to the final. “We have won a good mentality and in the end deserved”said Young on ZDF.

Bremen with the first chances
Werders Marco Grüll had the first good chance of the game after Patrice Čović passed, but missed the long corner of the goal from an acute angle from the left (14th). Čović then served Felix Agu in the 33rd minute, who shot over the goal with a direct acceptance. For Bremen it was also a bit about a revenge, in which Werder failed 1-2 in the quarter -finals in Bielefeld.

Bremen’s Senne Lynen grabbed the Bielefeld Marvin Mehlem on the penalty area shortly before the break. He was already warned and therefore very close, referee Robert Hartmann gave him another chance (38th).
Bittencourt outnumbered Werder
At Leonardo Bittencourt, Hartmann then had no choice: Bittencourt fouls twice in midfield, both times there was yellow – he had to go off the square (54.). At the second foul there was initially a benefit situation, but substitute Julian Kania shot just over the Bremen gate from a distance.

In the outnumber of Bremen, something was in trouble. Bielefeld’s captain Mael Corboz alluded to Kania from the left in the penalty area, who closed his back to the goal by hoe, but goalkeeper Michael Zetterer fought off the ball (57th). Bielefeld now had several good options, but Corboz (59.) and Kania (69th) failed. Bielefeld’s midfielder Sam Schreck said on ZDF: “We had to suffer a lot in the first half. The red card played us in the cards, then we played it down seriously.”
But a lot indicated an extension in the final phase, Young then had the alpine cheered in added time. Benjamin Boakye played the ball from the right, Kania let him through to Young, who kept his nerve in front of the goal and hit (90.+3).
Bielefeld’s captain Corboz, who had extended his contract before the game, said on ZDF: “We have been on a positive wave for seven months. If you have such a mentality, the results often come.”
Werder captain Friedl: “… otherwise it will be a very difficult year”
“We all have to get on track. Otherwise it will be a very difficult year”Bremen’s captain Marco Friedl said at Sky and referred to the starting program with Eintracht Frankfurt and Bayer Leverkusen.

“We left, that’s not nice”said Werder coach Horst Steffen at Sky. “We had a lot of degrees. After the yellow-red card we were only able to drive a few relief attacks. In the end, the outnumber was decisive.” Werder is in personnel problems. Numerous players are injured, goalkeeper Michael Zetterer is facing an exit to Einertgracht Frankfurt.
