The German record champion takes a former professional back into the club – and already has special plans with him.
Benno Schmitz will be bearing FC Bayern’s jersey again in the future. The 30-year-old changes from the Grasshoppers from Switzerland to Munich and signs a contract with the German record champions until 2026.
Schmitz thus returns to Säbener Straße after eleven years: the Munich native had grew up at FC Bayern, went through all youth teams from 2001, but did not play a game for the professionals. In 2014 the defender moved to Red Bull Salzburg, was also on the ball for RB Leipzig (2016-18) and 1. FC Köln (2018-24).
Schmitz is now to play a central role in the U23 team in the regional league at Bayern. Markus Weinzierl, sporting director of FC Bayern Campus, said: “We are convinced that he will be a very important factor for our U23 – on and off the square – and we are very much looking forward to the future together with him.”
