It was long speculated that Benjamin Hübner could succeed Sandro Wagner at the DFB. Now it’s official.

Sandro Wagner wants to leave the DFB in summer to work as a head coach. The games of the Nations League in June become his degree as assistant coach of Julian Nagelsmann. Now it is also clear who inherits Wagner: Benjamin Hübner. The association announced this on Saturday morning.

From July 1, 2025, Hübner will work as an additional assistant coach on the side of Benjamin Glück and Mads Buttgereit (assistant coach standards). The current assistant coach of TSG Hoffenheim says about his new job: “Being able to work for the national team is a great honor. I am really looking forward to the upcoming tasks in the coaching team.”

Hübner explained: “Under Julian Nagelsmann I had my most successful time in Hoffenheim, she strongly shaped me as a player, but also for my later job as an assistant coach. So I am very happy that the team will start with the team in September, and of course for the World Cup in the coming year, for which we will give everything.”

Hübner was player in Hoffenheim from 2016 to 2022. From there he also knows Nagelsmann, who was then a coach in Hoffenheim (2016 to 2019). Hübner played 69 competitive games under Nagelsmann. His relationship with the coach was good at the time.

The national coach said about his new assistant coach: “I know Benni very well from our three years together in Hoffenheim. He was always a real team player who burned and put on his own interests for the success.

Nagelsmann also said: “Especially with these skills and professional experience, he adds excellently to our coaching team. I am therefore very much looking forward to working with Benni again at the DFB team.”

Sports director Rudi Völler also emphasized that Hübner has a good view of the concerns of the players and that the trust between Nagelsmann and Hübner is also important in cooperation. He also explained that Hübner managing director Andreas Retting and he “absolutely convinced” him in the conversations.
