Gilabert and Waterloo, both 42 years old, were last seen in the small ski and spa town of Ovronnaz. They had left there on a walking tour. A telephone signal could still be picked up from Gilabert in the vicinity of Ovronnaz. Waterloo’s car was found in the same area.

Frédéric Waterloo came from Brussels, but is said to have lived in Valais in recent years. He regularly posted pictures of hiking trips in the mountains on Facebook. The French Gilabert worked as an oncologist, writes the Swiss newspaper ‘Le Matin’.

The police and emergency services searched for the duo for days. Helicopters were also used in the search, which has now ended fatally. According to the police, there is “concrete evidence of an avalanche that originated in the Chavalard region above Fully”. Because the area is particularly dangerous, “the police prohibit anyone from approaching the site,” a statement said.

The Public Prosecution Service has launched an investigation into the exact circumstances of the incident. The next of kin of the two victims have already been informed of their death.
