On Saturday, VfB Stuttgart will face FC Bayern in the final of the DFB Cup. The Swabians want to defend their title after their victory last year. But people in the region are already quite happy with the season.
“We are happy that we have now arrived in Berlin again – after last year. Once may be a coincidence, but twice not. We are playing internationally for the third year, in the DFB Cup final for the second time,” explained sports director Fabian Wohlgemuth in an interview with “Sky Sport”.
“Well, as we all know, satisfaction is the beginning of the end. In our case, however, this club has been able to demonstrate sustained upward development for three years. We are proud and satisfied with the team, individual and overall economic goals that have become possible within these three years,” said the official.
VfB Stuttgart was able to secure a place in the Champions League on the last matchday despite a 2-2 draw against Eintracht Frankfurt. For the second time in the last three years. Nübel’s departure is not officially an issue yet
After the cup final, some VfB players will go to the World Cup and others will go on vacation. Fabian Wohlgemuth, on the other hand, will have a lot to do to put together the squad for the coming season.
“We want to continue to operate solidly and have to address two issues,” says Wohlgemuth, looking at the coming transfer period.
“Of course, on the one hand, we want to send a team onto the field that meets the requirements of the Champions League and the Bundesliga. On the other hand, we want to set ourselves long-term goals, both economically and sportingly. One thing sometimes speaks against the other, but it is clear that it will be a stressful transfer summer, as always. We have to wait and see what happens during and after the World Cup, which player could still leave us. We will then act accordingly.”
One of the players who will probably leave the Swabians is Alexander Nübel. According to consistent media reports, VfB wants to refrain from another loan and instead rely on Dennis Seimen. The youngster is currently on loan at Paderborn.
“Dennis Seimen still has a very, very important game to play for SC Paderborn on Monday. In Alexander Nübel we have a very strong goalkeeper who has mostly kept our goal clean for over three years and who will also be with us in the DFB Cup final tomorrow. We will then deal with the goalkeeping situation for next year from next week,” Wohlgemuth did not allow himself to be persuaded to make a clear statement.
