Whatever you can say about the gray weather, it certainly produces special phenomena. This is the perfect weather for beautiful ice hair. Maran Lubsen sent us pictures of it.
“It grows from wood,” says RTV Drenthe weatherman Hans Nienhuis. The principle is quite simple: “The wood is very damp, also due to the fog. The moisture in the wood now freezes, and then it expands. So the ice looks for a way, and then it is pushed through the cracks and openings in the wood is squeezed out. It then grows up from the wood like hair.”
You just need the right weather for that. “The wood must be very moist and it must be just freezing for a while. If it freezes very hard it won’t work. Then it doesn’t have a chance. It must be just around freezing point.”
The fog will remain for a while, so it may appear in more and more places in the Drenthe forests in the coming days.
