The decline of German basketball champions Bayern Munich in the EuroLeague continues unabated.
The team of world champion coach Gordon Herbert lost on Friday at AS Monaco with world and European champion Daniel Theis with a crushing score of 77:103 (39:47), thus suffering their eighth defeat in a row. The last success (November 6th) was already six weeks ago.
Herbert then drew a sobering conclusion. “We played a good first seven minutes – and then they dominated us for the remaining 33 minutes,” said the 66-year-old.
Bayern, for whom European champion Oscar da Silva was the best scorer in Monaco with 13 points, remain in the bottom of the table with just five wins from 17 games. Only bottom team ASVEL Villeurbanne Lyon, where Bayern lost on Wednesday (74:76), has celebrated fewer successes this season (4) than the Bundesliga leaders.
The start of the game in the principality on the Cote d’Azur was initially quite promising. Bayern quickly led 11-2, but completely lost track at the end of the first quarter and had to let the hosts go after a 2:20 negative run. Theis, who had ten points and four rebounds, and his teammates continued to pull away in front of Fürst Albert. The Monegasques’ best shooter was Elie Okobo (18).
The Munich team still has a chance to end their horror series this year. After seven away games in a row, the FCBB welcomes the current EuroLeague table leaders Hapoel Tel Aviv on Tuesday.
