Captain Manuel Neuer has called for a quick reaction from FC Bayern Munich after the Bremen shock. “We have to recognize the seriousness of the situation, that we are not at the forefront. We are the hunters right now and that has to be in our minds,” said the goalkeeper of the German record champions after the 0-1 defeat against Werder Bremen. “We all have to understand that we have nothing to give away and that we just have to do our homework – and bring that to the field.”

Due to the 0-1 defeat against Werder Bremen on Sunday evening, Munich is seven points behind the top of the table and Bayer Leverkusen, who won 3-2. With a win on Wednesday in the catch-up game against 1. FC Union Berlin, Bayern could reduce the gap to four points.

“We have definitely been warned. We know what kind of run Leverkusen is currently having and that’s why we shouldn’t underestimate it,” said Neuer. “Nevertheless, we have to look to ourselves to win the game against Union and then we can move forward at full speed.”

In front of 75,000 spectators, the rebellion after the 0-1 deficit by the strong former Munich player Mitchell Weiser in the 59th minute against Bremen came too late. “I missed a bit of self-image, the way we played – especially at home,” said Neuer. “We are looking forward and have to show a different face here at home.”

A good week after the 3-0 win against Hoffenheim, the 0-1 win against Bremen was a serious dampener in the team’s desired comeback in the second half of the season. “There are always bumps in the season, there are ups and downs. No team, no player and no club like Bayern Munich wants that,” said the 37-year-old Bayern captain. “That’s part of it, even if you don’t want to admit it. But you then have to show a reaction and hopefully as quickly as possible.”
