Just under a year after signing his last contract, top talent Florian Wirtz has again extended his working papers at Bayer 04 Leverkusen. The 19-year-old national player, who has been out since last March with a cruciate ligament rupture, has signed a new contract until June 30, 2027 – as Transfermarkt learned, it does not include an exit clause. Up until his retirement, Wirtz was directly involved in 24 goals in 31 games for Bayer last season.
Wirtz came to Leverkusen from local rivals 1. FC Köln in January 2020 and quickly became a regular player and top performer. In 78 games for the “Werkself” to date, he has contributed 41 scorers. Since making his debut in September 2021, he has had four senior caps.
The extension is the “result of many constructive meetings in recent weeks. In doing so, we were able to show important and convincing perspectives for one of the best German players of the coming decade: Above all, of course, a great squad that also allows Florian’s own strengths to develop,” said the outgoing sporting director Rudi Völler. “Florian knows that we will continue to be competitive in Leverkusen in the coming years and that we will attack at national and international level. And he will be an important part of it. I’m looking forward to watching this boy play football in the Werkself shirt for a long time to come.”
Bayer Leverkusen and Wirtz already “an extraordinary success story”
Völler’s successor Simon Rolfes added: “In trusting and very good discussions with Florian and his family, we have agreed to continue on the path we started in January 2020. The fact that we are documenting this here and now with a further extension of the cooperation, which was planned anyway, underlines the absolute satisfaction on both sides. The connection between Bayer 04 and Florian Wirtz is already an extraordinary success story. With this in mind, we want to write more chapters. Florian is a special player. He is of great sporting importance to our club and we offer him the best opportunities for a fantastic sporting career. Together, we know that we can still achieve a lot.”
