Bayer Leverkusen: Season off for Robert Andrich and Odilon Kossounou

injured in Rome

The first version of this article was published on May 12 at 12:44 p.m. and was subsequently updated with the exact diagnosis.

Midfielder Robert Andrich may have broken his metatarsal in Bayer 04 Leverkusen’s 1-0 draw in the Europa League semi-final first leg at AS Roma. “This is bad news,” said coach Xabi Alonso on Friday morning. “We have to see if the left foot is broken or if it’s just a bruise. But of course we are concerned at the moment that it is a serious injury.”

While the team enjoyed a rest day in Rome, Andrich flew home on Friday morning for in-depth investigations. The whole thing was “very painful”, said the 28-year-old, who did not want to make a prognosis. “No idea. Luckily I’ve never had an experience like this before. So I can’t judge it,” he said. “Unfortunately, I heard a bad noise, which scares a bit. But I’m assuming the best for now.”

Update May 12, 6:17 p.m.: Now it’s confirmed: Andrich suffered a fracture in his left metatarsal, which resulted in the end of the season.

Odilon Kossounou (22) and Jeremie Frimpong (22) also sustained injuries from the game. Kossounou, who had already limped off after 34 minutes and was supported by the doctors, had a relatively clear feeling, said Alonso. The defender probably suffered a torn muscle fiber. Head of sport Simon Rolfes didn’t seem to be expecting anything good either: “It might be a bit more for Odi.” Those responsible are less worried about winger Frimpong, who, unlike the other two, stayed in Rome on Friday. “He took a beating in the first half and again at the end,” said Rolfes. “It’s probably not that much of a problem with him though.”

Update May 12, 6:17 p.m.: According to Bayer, Kossounou has suffered a muscle injury in his right thigh and, like Andrich, will not be able to play again this season.

Recently, the injury concerns of the “Werkself” shifted to the offensive, where Patrik Schick (27), Karim Bellarabi (33) and Callum Hudson-Odoi (22) are still absent.
