After the end of Xabi Alonso, Bayer Leverkusen needs a new trainer. The choice is probably a prominent name.

Bayer Leverkusen and Erik Ten HAG have apparently reached a fundamental agreement. This reports the well -informed “New York Times” on Saturday. Accordingly, there is little signature in the way. Ten HAG would succeed Xabi Alonso, who probably left the former German champion towards Real Madrid.

In addition to ten HAG, CESC Fàbregas (Como 1907) was also a hot candidate in Leverkusen. But according to the “kicker”, the Spaniard had recently canceled. He still wanted to stay in Como.

Ten HAG was recently head coach of Manchester United for more than two years, but was released there in October last year. In Manchester he had previously won the Carabao Cup (2023) and the FA Cup (2024). In the league, however, the “Red Devils” could not meet the claims.

His undoubtedly the most successful station was previously at Ajax. With the club from Amsterdam, ten HAG shaped an era, won three championships and two cup wins. In addition, Ajax surprisingly reached the Champions League semi-final in the 2018/19 season, helping talented players such as Matthijs de Ligt (now Manchester United) and Frenkie de Jong (FC Barcelona) to the next step.

Bayer Leverkusen would not be ten Hag’s first stop in Germany. From 2013 to 2015 he was already a coach of the U23 of FC Bayern when Pep Guardiola was head coach of the professional team. Finally, he was always considered a candidate at Borussia Dortmund, but it never came to an agreement. Now he apparently gets a chance elsewhere to prove himself in the Bundesliga.
