Bayer 04 Leverkusen: Xabi Alonso preferred candidate at Real Madrid

Madrid would have to pay a fee

Bayer 04 Leverkusen is currently the team with the best form in the Bundesliga. Since the beginning of March, the “Werkself” have collected 20 out of a possible 24 points and thus more than FC Bayern (16) and Borussia Dortmund (15). The fact that the club is back on course for European competition despite a weak first half of the season is also thanks to Xabi Alonso. His performances on the coaching bench have attracted international attention – according to a report by “Sport Bild”, the Spaniard is a top candidate for Real Madrid.

The era of Carlo Ancelotti could come to an end for the “Royal” in the summer. The 63-year-old has received an offer from the Brazilian federation for the Seleção. Even if the Italian indicated at the beginning of April that he would like to stay in Madrid, a departure this summer is not out of the question. The second in the LaLiga is therefore keeping an eye out for potential successors. According to the report, President Florentino Pérez’s preferred candidate is Alonso.

The 41-year-old wore the Real jersey himself between 2009 and 2014 and won the Champions League in 2013/14. Similar to Raúl, who has been the head coach of the Madrilenians’ second team since 2019, Alonso is seen as a long-term option with club DNA.

Bayer 04: Xabi Alonso has the second best point average of any coach since 2000

In addition, the numbers at Leverkusen speak for themselves. Since taking over from Gerardo Seoane in October 2022, the Spaniard has averaged 1.87 points in 31 games – in the 21st century Bayer 04 have only had the coaching duo Sascha Lewandowski and Sami Hyypiä (April 2012 to June 2013) with 1.92 Counters for a better record.

Alonso’s contract – like that of Ancelotti at Real – is dated until 2024 and does not contain an exit clause. According to the report, a change of coach this summer will not be less likely. The Spanish record champions would reportedly be willing to pay a significant transfer fee for Alonso. A successful end of the season, for example by winning the Europa League, would also play into the hands of Leverkusen in possible negotiations.
