Battle of Passchendaele commemorated with torchlight

The Third Battle of Ypres, also known as the Battle of Passchendaele, was a major battle fought on the Ypres Salient in 1917 during WWI. For years the territory had been plowed and torn by trenches. A place where thousands of soldiers died. On the eve of the Armistice, hundreds of people gathered in Passchendaele to commemorate those victims.

It is an annual commemoration with torches, during which the last 100 meters that soldiers made at the time are covered again. There are also various ceremonies and activities in Zonnebeke on Armistice Day itself.
