The former national player is part of the ARD broadcast as an expert. Before the game starts, however, it is less what Bastian Schweinsteiger says that is noticeable – but rather his clothes.

FC Bayern against VfB Stuttgart, DFB Cup final in Berlin. The German champions against the defending champions. The crowning conclusion to this 2025/26 season. This year again, ARD was there as the broadcaster of the final in Berlin, with presenter Alex Schlüter and 2014 world champion Bastian Schweinsteiger as experts.

But it wasn’t just the duo that was unusual – Schweinsteiger usually leads through the broadcasts with Schlüter’s colleague Esther Sedlaczek – but above all the former national player’s simple, monochrome outfit.

Schweinsteiger dressed in black before the DFB Cup

Before kick-off, Schweinsteiger stood on the lawn of the Berlin Olympic Stadium completely in black: black T-shirt, black oversized trousers, black shoes, and a little later also in a black jacket. Unusual for the 41-year-old, who is usually dressed in tasteful color combinations on ARD broadcasts.

Schweinsteiger has been an expert in international match and DFB Cup broadcasts on ARD since 2020, initially standing in front of the camera with presenter Matthias Opdenhövel, then with his colleague Jessy Wellmer. Since the 2022 World Cup, Schweinsteiger and Sedlaczek have actually been the regular duo in the broadcasts on Erste.

Schweinsteiger ended his active career in 2019 with the Chicago Fire, for whom he had appeared in 86 competitive games since 2017. The midfielder previously played for top English club Manchester United for two seasons. However, Schweinsteiger spent the overwhelming part of his career at FC Bayern, whose jersey he wore from youth to professional level from 1998 to 2015.
