The past season ended without a title for the FC Bayern basketball team. With healthy and fresh players – like the new signing Isaac Bonga from the NBA – the goal in the new season is to win the championship and the cup.

The past season of the Basketball Bundesliga ended disappointingly for FC Bayern: Alba Berlin becomes champion for the third time in a row and that too in Munich. In the end, the Munich team were BBL runners-up and again reached the playoff quarter-finals in the EuroLeague, but there were no titles to celebrate. Also in the BBL Cup there was only one disappointment with the early end against Chemnitz.

Gold instead of silver

In the new season, which starts on Wednesday, September 28th, with the early game between champions Alba Berlin and Hamburg, Bayern now want to celebrate titles again. They start on Saturday, October 1st, at home against Ulm.

At the end of the season in spring, Bayern ran out of breath and the squad was getting smaller and smaller due to illness and injuries. It should be better this year, so the Munich basketball players have upgraded their team.

NBA players for the championship title mission

Coach Andrea Trinchieri wants “healthy players and fresh players” and he gets them: With Isaac Bonga, Bayern bring back a German national player from the NBA. This top transfer was probably only possible because Bonga injured himself before the European Championships (tear of the syndesmosis ligament in his right ankle) and first completed his rehabilitation.

Ambitious player for an ambitious club

Bonga is 22, comes from the Rhineland, spent four years in the NBA with the LA Lakers, Washington Wizards and most recently with the Toronto Raptors. The decision to play for Bayern was easy for him: “FC Bayern is a very ambitious club that always wants to win and that’s the same for me. That appeals to me, it was simply FC Bayern for me Select.”

Bonga – the octopus

Bonga has to finish his rehabilitation first, but the national player has recovered and is one of the strongest defenders in Europe according to his coach. Because he always has his fingers in between.

Trinchieri describes him as “Kraken, that’s the word.” The octopus, Bonga, has great ambitions himself and a clear plan for the new season: “Our goals are to win the EuroLeague Playoffs Final Four, the championship and the cup – as I said, everything is very, very ambitious.” No title doesn’t seem like an option this year.
