The world’s largest chemical company BASF is investing in the production of hydrogen.

A so-called proton exchange membrane electrolyser was put into operation at the Ludwigshafen location. The system for the production of CO2-free hydrogen has a connecting performance of 54 megawatts. According to the DAX group, it should produce every hour up to a ton of the chemical starting material that is important for the location.

The construction of the facility was funded by the Federal Ministry of Economics and Climate Protection in cooperation with the state of Rhineland-Palatinate with up to 124.3 million euros. The Mainz state government agreed to 37.3 million euros. BASF’s investment sum is around 25 million euros.

Two -year construction period

According to the company, the construction period of the facility, which was built in cooperation with Siemens Energy, was two years. Federal Economic and Environmental Secretary Udo Philipp spoke of a lighthouse project for the integration of hydrogen into a chemical production location. “It is the largest project of this kind so far in Germany and therefore an important pioneer to achieve our climate goals.”

Prime Minister Alexander Schweitzer (SPD) said that the commissioning of the plant for the production of green hydrogen was a milestone for the ritness of the hydrogen economy in Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany as well as Europe and an important commitment to the BASF to its technology and production location in Ludwigshafen. The state government is convinced that hydrogen plays a key role for decarbonization and securing our industrial workplaces.

Use of hydrogen when producing ammonia

Among other things, hydrogen is used in the production of ammonia and methanol or is required for the production of vitamins. The electrolyser now has the potential to reduce the greenhouse gas emissions at the BASF main plant by up to 72,000 tons per year, the company said.

On Tuesday, BASF shares in the Xetra business ultimately tended 1.32 percent firmer at 53.16 euros.
