Baseball players Amsterdam Pirates win national title after thriller. “Best moment of my career”

Amsterdam Pirates has sensationally won the seventh national title in club history. After a true thriller, the baseball players were just too strong for Neptunus: 9-8. “This is the best moment of my career,” pitcher Nelmerson Angela beamed afterwards.

The baseball players from Amsterdam forced the deciding match earlier on Sunday. Since they won 5-1 in the sixth game, making it 3-3 in the best-of-seven series.

Thriller

In that seventh game, Amsterdam took a 4-0 lead in the second inning, but Neptunus tied the score in the same inning. The Rotterdam team ran out to 7-4. Thanks to, among other things, a homerun by Amsterdam captain Roelie Henrique, the score was 8-8 after five innings.

In the eighth inning, Jules Cremer crossed home plate and the team from Amsterdam led 9-8. In Neptunus’ exciting final at bat, no runs were scored and Amsterdam Pirates became national champions. “A dream final for all spectators,” beamed Jorrit Penseel after the win. The first baseman was subsequently voted MVP of the Holland Series.

At the beginning of the season, almost no one expected Amsterdam to be in the Holland Series. The main sponsor and many players left. Coach Mervin Gario had to work with a young team. “I expected this. Just ask. I also worked at Pioniers with modest means,” was Mervin Gario’s comment afterwards.

It is the seventh title in history for Pirates. This happened before in 1987, 1990, 2008, 2011, 2019 and 2021. Last season the title went to HCAW from Bussum.
