Barcelona installs 7 traffic cameras and 18 light signals in Montjuïc co-financed by Barça

The mountain of Montjuic In a few weeks it will have a deployment of new material elements to better manage mobility. Barcelona City Council has approved a package of improvements that includes 7 traffic control cameras, 18 light signals of different types and traffic lights to shield pedestrian crossings at four key points. It will arrive half a year after the arrival of the culé fans in the mountains, at a time when attendance at the Lluís Companys Olympic stadium is slow, but it will remain as Barça legacy after the return of matches to Les Corts in autumn 2024. Same as the renovation of escalators planned for 2024 and 2025.

The municipal government of Jaume Collboni gave the green light on November 23 to the executive project for cameras and signals. You have a budget of 1.73 million euros and it is one of the actions co-financed between the council and FC Barcelona, following the club’s exile due to the renovation of the Camp Nou. The documentation, consulted by EL PERIÓDICO, places the work of installation between January and February 2024. Municipal sources confirm the placement on site “at the beginning of 2024.” The whole of the works will last a little longer, six months: they will last at least until Easter because the pavement must be replaced after the installation of the new wiring.

Seven cameras, not radars

The most striking element of the order is 7 control cameras of traffic. They are not radars nor will they look for violating vehicles to fine them. They are video cameras to know the flow of traffic, like those in other parts of the city, which are not used for sanctions, unlike the new radars implemented in 2023. Of course, as this newspaper already explained at Easter, Barça and City Council agreed on a “zone zero” in which unauthorized vehicles cannot enter and the cameras will help supervise it.

Three of the seven cameras will be on Estadi Avenue. Another will be placed on Maria Cristina Avenue with Rius i Taulet and two more will go to Foc Street, while the last one will be for the Olímpic Promenade.

They will also be installed two light signals reinforcement to indicate the current direction of the reversible lane on Foc Street. Additionally, the package includes 8 variable information panels like those used to indicate collapses in large arteries. They will be scattered along the roads that give access to the Olympic Ring: Zona Franca promenade, Foc street, Gran Via, Tarragona street, Josep Carner promenade and Paral·lel avenue. And finally there will also be 8 temporarily prohibited parking signs with a light panel for the date of impact, so that it can be updated for each notable match or event.

Four zebra crossings with traffic lights

Finally, the improvement includes reinforcing traffic lights at four busy points on the mountain. The executive project of the works admits that “currently the existing traffic lights in Montjuïc are scarce and there are many pedestrian crossings without traffic lights.” Thus, this winter the green, yellow and red lights will finally arrive at Plaza Neptú, the CEM Pau Negre – in front of which two new crossings will be created –, the Poble Espanyol gate and the intersection of Estadi avenue with the Olímpic promenade. .
