Vincent Kompany usually doesn’t reveal details about his planned lineup, but he has learned in his career that things are different for goalkeepers: “That’s why it’s better to just be clear.” Jonas Urbig will be in goal instead of Manuel Neuer against Borussia Mönchengladbach. The reason is very simple: “Of course that has something to do with the fact that he starts against Cologne on Thursday,” explained Kompany. Neuer is still banned from the DFB Cup.

The 39-year-old will travel to the bottom team in Gladbach and sit on the bench there: “We discussed this clearly with Manu during the week.” Neuer is currently a big topic of conversation with the German record champions. His contract expires at the end of the season, but according to media reports, FC Bayern is said to be interested in an extension. The goalkeeper himself reacted to the rumors with a wink after the 4-0 win against Club Brugge in the Champions League: “I have to look after my bones. It’s already late and I’m noticing it again now. Let’s see what it’s like when I get up.”
Gladbach in a negative vortex
This would delay the generational change in Munich by a year. Urbig at least has the best conditions to gain security against the “foals”. Like Bayern, the Gladbachers are currently breaking records, but in the negative sense of the word. Across all seasons, Borussia have not won 14 Bundesliga games in a row and have scored a meager six goals in the current season. For comparison: Harry Kane scored twelve goals during that time.

Despite everything, Manuel Neuer in particular has experience of how a young goalkeeper can go against Gladbach. Neuer played his first game for Bayern Munich in the Bundesliga on the first matchday of the 2011/12 season in the 0-1 defeat against Borussia Mönchengladbach. He played a decisive role in conceding the goal.
