The mid-career restyling helped. Few tweaks aimed at refreshing the design of the SUV Coupé Audi Q8, especially at the front. New colors for the bodywork, new designs for the rims and technological features until the work is completed. On the other hand, you don’t change a team that wins: the raised-drive flagship is the leader in the segment 5 years after its launch, with over 9,000 units sold. The protagonist of the test is the 50 Tdi engine, with the six-cylinder diesel engine with 286 HP of power. Well yes, Audi hasn’t abandoned diesel. Good news for those who want or need to travel a lot and want to do it in relaxation. The consumption data is worthy of note.

Audi Q8 2024: how it is made, the design

Dimensions and proportions remain the same: we are faced with an SUV measuring 4,992 mm in length, 1,995 mm in width (excluding mirrors) and 1,697 mm in height, with a rear cut that is practical for loading and pleasing to the eye. Here you are, the visual impact – already notable before – now it becomes even clearer thanks to a carefully revised and retouched front without distorting the appearance of the E-segment car. The design of the Audi logo has been renewed, now two-dimensional, around which the octagonal single frame develops – enlarged – with the grille which incorporates the groups opticians. Restylized bumpers and more generous air intakes complete the look at the front, while at the rear the exhaust terminals have been redesigned like the extractor and the light signature presents a clean and linear design without interruption. Thanks to the new Matrix HD LED headlights with laser spots (light cone up to 600 meters away over 70 km/h and outside residential areas) and the rear light clusters with Oled technology you can choose between four different light layouts via the Mmi. Two new colors for the bodywork, Blu Ascari and Oro Sakhir, as well as two new materials for the inserts: matt carbon twill and aluminum with linear embossing. However, there are five new designs for the rims with dimensions from 21 to 23″. Finally, even on traditional engines the small red rectangle appears – usually bearing the writing RS or S – in front of the lettering next to the rear license plate.

Audi Q8 2024: how it is made, the interior

On board the Audi Q8 restyling you live in a premium environment from every point of view: soft materials that are pleasant both to the touch and to the eye alternate with high-level technological content made up of three digital screens. Space and comfort are certainly not lacking, not even for the occupants of the second row. The virtual cockpit behind the steering wheel – the latter slim and clean in its design, easy to grip – is easy to manage, while the infotainment system in the center of the dashboard “hides” a more massive amount of information. Finally, the third screen, the climate control screen, located under the infotainment screen, is intuitive.

Audi Q8 2024: how it is made, the technique

Also on the list are the 45 Tdi (231 HP and 91,000 euros), the 55 Tfsi (340 HP and 94,100 euros) and the SQ8 with 507 HP and a price starting from 129,250 euros, but the star of the test is the 50 Tdi. Under the bonnet there is the six-cylinder turbodiesel with 286 HP of maximum power which works in synergy with an electric motor in such a way that it can be classified as a mild hybrid car. This system promises to save half a liter of fuel every 100 km. With the rest of the engine range, the 50 Tdi shares the 8-speed tiptronic automatic transmission and quattro all-wheel drive which distributes torque 40% to the front and 60% to the rear in optimal grip conditions. The adaptive air suspension is standard and can increase the ground clearance by up to 90 mm, depending on the need and the driving mode selected.

Audi Q8 2024: how it goes

The optional option is a must all-wheel steering with four-wheel steering: they give stability on fast speeds and practicality in maneuvers and in narrow terrain. And with an SUV of 5 meters or less, having the rear wheels steering in counter-phase at low speeds becomes an important factor. And it’s equally true when you take a hilly road and pick up the pace to have some fun. Yes, because what is surprising about a car of this size and weight (2,160 kg empty) is the ability to convey strong emotions between the curves. Thanks to the variable suspension, the pneumatic suspensions which absorb every single pothole and compression of the asphalt at any speed, allowing the driver and passengers to remain relaxed and let the Audi technology work. Here, the right balance between comfort and sportiness – with 600 Nm of torque ready to unleash – gives the Q8 with the diesel V6 that versatility that you wouldn’t expect on an E-segment SUV.

Audi Q8 2024: consumption

Tested on a route consisting of both a motorway stretch and extra-urban and hilly roads, the Audi Q8 50 Tdi mild hybrid confirmed the consumption declared in the technical data sheet, which is absolutely not a given. Audi claims between 11.4 and 12.3 km of mileage with one liter of diesel. Well, by maintaining 130 km/h with adaptive cruise control on the motorway and leaving room for emotions on the most tortuous stretch, the Q8 maintained an average consumption of 11.5 km/l. An excellent result if you consider that under the bonnet there is a 3-litre V6 turbo diesel with 286 HP of power, you have quattro all-wheel drive and you are on board a large SUV weighing 2,160 kg unladen.

Audi Q8 2024: pros and cons

Below are the features that convinced us the most and those that convinced us least of the Audi Q8 50 Tdi model year 2024.

  • Design: aggressive at the front, luxurious at the rear. It is Audi’s flagship SUV and it shows. The new Ascari Blue colour, then, has great charm and in person goes very well with the bodywork of the car, more than the other colours;
  • Four-wheel steering: on an SUV of this size they become a fundamental factor in giving the car agility and stability;
  • Consumption: those declared are true. And on the motorway, at 130 km/h with the adaptive cruise control, it is possible to travel 13 km on one liter of fuel;
  • Versatility: comfortable on the go, fun on the hills and mountains. The credit goes (also) to the adaptive air suspension, the 90 mm variable suspension and the all-wheel steering (optional).
  • Accelerator response: even in the sportiest mode, pressing down on the accelerator pedal does not result in an immediate response. There is a sort of slightly perceptible lag which however does not affect the dynamic judgment of the car.
