Surprise in Paris: Daniel Altmaier knocked Casper Ruud, ninth in the world rankings, out of the tournament at the ATP Masters in the French capital.
The 27-year-old tennis professional from Kempen won the hard court event on Wednesday 6:3, 7:5. His opponent in the round of 16 will be determined by Canadian Felix Auger-Aliassime and Frenchman Alexandre Müller.
Altmaier is really cool
Altmaier got off to a strong start at the tournament, in which the top German player Alexander Zverev is also in the round of 16 as the defending champion. He caused real problems for Ruud on his second serve and grabbed the first round.
In the second set, the Davis Cup player stayed focused and served to win the match – but then had to accept another break. But Altmaier stayed cool, showed a strong reaction and shouted his great joy after winning the match.
