A racist incident occurred during the minute’s silence for the victims of the Magdeburg attack before the game between Essen and VfB Stuttgart II.
While the third division players from Rot-Weiss Essen and VfB Stuttgart II commemorated the victims of the Magdeburg attack with bowed heads, a male voice burst into the silence of the stadium with the racist slogan “Germany for the Germans”.
The words could be clearly heard not only in the stadium, but also on the television broadcast. Many fans in the Essen stadium reacted promptly with chants of “Nazis out!”
As the Essen police confirmed to SWR Sport, the racist troublemaker was a man who was immediately expelled from the stadium. An investigation has now been initiated against him, according to an Essen police spokesman.
According to “Reviersport”, the man was in the Essen West curve. “The person our security service took out was the man who shouted ‘Germany the German’. He was taken to the stadium guard, banned from entering the building and charged with incitement to hatred,” RWE press spokesman Henrik Lerch is quoted as saying.
In terms of sport, the basement duel between both teams ended with a 2:2 (1:0). Leonardo Vonić gave the home team the lead in the 19th minute of the game. The other three goals came in the final phase.
