At least twenty-five dead in Libya due to heavy storm

At least twenty-five people have been killed in Libya by Storm Daniel, Reuters news agency said on Monday. The storm hit the cities of Benghazi, Sousse, Al Bayda, Al-Marj and Derna, destroying houses and roads.

In response to the storm, the government in Tripoli declared a state of emergency and imposed a curfew. Schools, shops and other facilities are closed pending better weather. “We are assessing the damage so that we can compensate all citizens if their homes or farms are damaged,” said Libyan Prime Minister Abdul Hamid Mohammed Dbeibeh.

The storm started in Greece and caused fifteen deaths there. According to Reuters, it is the strongest storm the country has experienced since 1930. Meanwhile, Daniel is on his way to the Egyptian border. The western cities of Salloum, Siwa, Matrouh and Alexandria will be hit there, like this predicts the Egyptian Meteorological Institute. Cairo, among other places, is already dealing with high wind speeds and blowing sand.
