At least thirteen dead after fire in Spanish nightclub

At least thirteen people were killed in a major fire at a nightclub in the Spanish city of Murcia on Sunday. Several people were injured and the police do not rule out that the death toll could rise Spanish media report. An unknown number of people are still missing.

The fire broke out early Sunday morning in a club in the Las Atalayas entertainment area. The fire then spread to two adjacent buildings. Emergency services had the fire under control after about two hours and then entered the affected buildings to look for victims. This is difficult in some places because the fire has severely damaged the buildings.

It is still unclear what the cause of the fire is. The mayor of Murcia has three days of mourning announced after the incident. It is the worst incident in a nightlife area in Spain since 1990, when 43 people were killed in a fire in a nightclub in Zaragoza.
