The Primavera Sound Festival in Barcelona is entering its 25th edition next year. Around 200,000 paying guests attended the 24th edition over three days, which ended at the weekend with the Gorillaz.
The cross-genre format ranges from The Cure to regional DJs who perform the nightly program on the club stages on the beach. The festival is fully sponsored and has a cultured, relaxed feel.
The stages are unabashedly named after the festival financiers: the fintech giant Revolut, the Spanish car manufacturer Cupra and the German hair styling brand Schwarzkopf shape the image.
An audience beyond generations
The greatest treasure of the Primavera makers, who have long been represented with sister events in other cities, lies in the structure of the audience: across all generations. Teenagers, scantily clad because of the weather, stand next to gray-bearded men in cargo pants. The mix is very international.
Barcelona in June is ideal for a city trip with pop music accompaniment. When tested by Rolling Stone, the average age at the wine and cava stands was well over 33 years old. In the event industry, there are many attempts to retain older generations with purchasing power.
The audiovisual power of Gorillaz
Against the spectacular backdrop of the Parc del Fòrum, it wasn’t just musical boundaries that were ignored. The audiovisual spectacle of the Gorillaz finale became one of the most discussed moments of the Catalan festival weekend.
The Primavera Sound is increasingly moving away from its originally strong “indie-alternative” orientation and is increasingly integrating pop acts. A trend that could also be observed at Coachella 2026.
In addition to established names from the “alternative” segment, up-and-coming underground acts such as Femtanyl, Fakemink and the South Korean band Hypnosis Therapy performed. There were also pop numbers like PinkPantheress, which led to significant overcrowding, especially during the performance in the smaller Cupra area, and put a strain on crowd management for a short time.
Refunds and storm cancellations
The festival confirmed refunds for Thursday tickets for the first day of the festival. Several headlining performances – including Massive Attack, Doja Cat and Bad Gyal – had to be canceled due to safety concerns amid heavy rain and wind gusts of around 50mph.
Owners of Thursday day tickets will receive a full refund of the ticket price. The festival organization announced that it would announce the exact processing of refunds. Owners of a 3-day festival pass (“Abono”) will currently not receive a pro-rata refund for Thursday, as the festival could continue as normal on the remaining days.
Streaming as a success factor
A key success factor is the international reach of the festival. Amazon Music produced the official live stream for the fifth time in a row and broadcast numerous concerts worldwide via Amazon Music, Twitch and Prime Video.
This meant fans around the world were able to watch performances live. The extensive streaming presence underlines the growing importance of digital festival formats.
