Myanmar’s military junta previously confirmed it had carried out an operation in the area of Pazi Gyi village on Tuesday, but did not provide an account of casualties from the airstrikes.
A villager assisting in the cremation of the bodies, who wished to remain anonymous for security reasons, said his crew increased the tally from 130 dead on Thursday to 171 dead on Friday. In addition to 109 men, 24 women and 38 children were also killed. The attack also left 53 injured.
The village of Pazi Gyi was deserted on Friday, the inhabitants are too afraid to return. The Sagaing region is a stronghold of resistance to the junta’s rule. There has been fierce fighting for months.
