‘ASML hires fewer people, monster job to train everyone’

ASML will be hiring fewer new people in the near future, the explosive growth has come to an end. This is reported by the Eindhovens Dagblad. Last year, the chip machine manufacturer in Veldhoven hired 10,000 new people and the workforce grew to 40,000. Such a large number of new people puts pressure on the organization, a spokesperson told the newspaper.

ASML has been recruiting new employees continuously for years, of the 40,000 employees, about half work in the Veldhoven region.

According to a spokesperson, it is good to take a break now, because the large number of new people demands a lot from the organization. It turns out to be a monster job to train all these new people, said the ED.

As an example, a spokesperson gives the fact that new employees have a lot to learn when they hold a technical position. Because the specific technique cannot be learned in school.

Less demand for laptops
All those new people were needed to meet the explosive demand for chip machines. Recently, there has been less demand for consumer electronics such as smartphones and laptops. ASML customers would therefore store less inventory and produce fewer chips.

This also has an effect on the sale of chip machines. According to a spokesman, the decline is mainly in the short term and growth is still expected in the longer term.

According to the newspaper, it is not about a complete freeze on vacancies, only the growth rate is declining. The spokesperson cannot say until when. If you now look at ASML’s website, you will see more than five hundred vacancies worldwide. A few months ago there were about twice as many.

Pressure on the housing market
The growth of ASML has already caused a lot in the Eindhoven region in the past year. The large number of people who need to be accommodated puts even more pressure on the already tight housing market. ASML paid millions in May for the nearby Heerseweg. The chip machine manufacturer bought thirteen houses there to be able to expand in the future.

But schools and general practitioners in the region are also concerned. For example, a wave of foreign children is expected, partly from expats.

GPs fear a major shortage of healthcare personnel and practice rooms due to the large number of foreign employees coming to the Eindhoven region. They call on large employers such as ASML to help, for example by sponsoring practice rooms.
