On Wednesday evening in Berlin, the Federal Association of the Music Industry (BVMI) honored three artists who significantly determined the Official German Charts 2025. At the Artist Celebration Night at Station Berlin, Kontra K, Oimara and Zartmann were honored in front of around 280 guests from the music industry, politics, media and culture. The awards are based on the Official German Charts, which are determined by GfK Entertainment on behalf of the BVMI.
We spoke to BVMI board chairman Florian Drücke about the Artist Celebration Night – and what its future will look like.
What was your personal highlight last night?
The view from the stage of the industry gathered in the hall – not only because everyone was so “there” and everything was really beautifully lit, but also because after a long time artists, company colleagues, culture, media and politics met in this constellation and shared a special moment with each other and visibly enjoyed it. I was able to see the encounter from there.
Why is it important to celebrate the industry and its most successful artists?
As part of the creative economy, the German music industry is an important industry that, in addition to the artistic impact, also has a high economic impact that deserves more stage for more visibility. Especially given the enormous transformation and challenges that lie ahead of us. By honoring chart successes in a celebratory setting, at the Artist Celebration Night we focused on these two sides of the coin, i.e. the creative and the economic aspect, and at the same time incorporated the clear vote of the fans in Germany.
Is the Artist Celebration Night the test run for a new Echo?
No, it is neither a new echo, but an impulse, a nucleus from which something new and unique can emerge if it is supported by the industry.
How is the German music market currently doing and what are the biggest challenges?
Overall, there is a lot of movement in the market, which also reflects the special challenges we face as an industry: the next stage of digital change, keyword generative AI, which requires a lot of focus; but also the streaming economy, the topic of manipulation, the role of copyright… in general, in my opinion, it remains a major translation task for the industry to better explain the various forms of partnerships surrounding artists. Sometimes I have the impression that we ourselves need to be aware of how quickly we move and how difficult it is for outsiders to understand this. A variety of topics that we will continue to work on intensively immediately after the Artist Celebration Night!
