Berlin (dpa -AfX) – The German armaments company Helsing wants to quickly advance the use of artificial intelligence (AI) for military defense. With the Swedish manufacturer Saab, the installation of an AI application for the aircraft in the fighter jet Gripen is being prepared, said Gundbert Scherf, co-founder and co-chairman, the German press agency in Berlin. In addition, Helsing wants to present an autonomous system for application to sail.

The Munich company has developed the drone HX -2 for use – initially in Ukraine – that uses artificial intelligence to control explosions to a goal and to be less susceptible to interference measures.

Helsing also founded a partnership with the French space startup Loft Orbital. The aim is to educate satellites that can monitor limits and troop movements with AI.

Scherf considers more speed for armor to be necessary

To the project of a AI fight pilot, Scherf said: “We will bring the system to the gripes with our partner Saab this year. So we can prove this in a manned system, do not have to start an autonomous system with all certification difficulties.”

With a view to the new technologies and a changed security situation, he demanded: “We really have to jump on this train now. In the next three or five years, we can build a sovereign, unmanned fighter plane that has autonomous skills for education or complex missions. And from my point of view we can do it here in Europe.”

He assumes that the Air Force of the future has significantly more systems. There is a chance to build European-sovereign and significantly cheaper than a fighter plane. Scherf said: “We have to think in hundreds, if not thousands of systems.”/CN/DP/MIS
