Argentina fears Messi’s use in World Cup qualifying

World champion Argentina is worried about the use of Lionel Messi ahead of the World Cup qualifier against Paraguay.

The superstar looked “good” in training, but national coach Lionel Scaloni left it open whether he would call on his captain, who was recently injured for a long time, in the game on Friday night in Buenos Aires.

Messi has only played 37 minutes for his club Inter Miami in the North American professional league MLS since September 3rd due to muscle problems. “I have to discuss it with him and make sure we are confident that he can start,” Scaloni said.

Argentina have won their two games so far in South American World Cup qualifying and are level with Brazil at the top of the table with six points.

Paraguay has one point after two games and is in sixth place, the last place eligible for direct qualification for the 2026 World Cup in Canada, Mexico and the USA.
