Arend suspects that his father ended up in Andijk through the ‘yellow church’ that was designed by his grandfather, the architect Commer de Geus in 1928. “It may have had contacts that he could use during the war,” says Arend.

“I think my father is in hiding to escape from the Laborseinsatz. Students from the University of Amsterdam were only allowed to continue studying after signing a loyalty statement to the Germans. Otherwise they were in the risk of being put to work in Germany”.
