Are water-saving shower heads worth it in the household?

From BZ/dpa

We use a lot of water when we shower. But consumers can save with a simple trick. All you have to do is change the shower head – Stiftung Warentest examined 20 water-saving models.

15 liters of water per minute flow through a conventional shower head when showering.

But if you swap your shower head for a water-saving shower head, you can save a lot of water, energy and money. This is what the testers at Stiftung Warentest found out.

Because there are models where the average consumption is less than nine liters per minute. According to calculations by Stiftung Warentest, annual savings of up to 345 euros per person are possible.

20 models tested

The testers examined a total of 20 water-saving shower heads at prices between 10 and 130 euros. At least 14 of them got the grade “good”. Three test models received the rating “satisfactory”. Three other showers received the rating “poor” – partly because buyers could hardly save with them.

Six models were at the top of the test with an overall rating of 1.9.

The cheapest and at the same time most economical shower head among the test winners was the Grohe Vitalio Start 100 model – it had an average water consumption of 5.5 liters per minute and cost the testers 20.80 euros.

The models from were also convincing Duravit (3jet 110 MinusFlow hand shower) for 28 euros and Hansgrohe (Pulsify Select S) for 30 eurosbecause they consumed less than nine liters per minute and rinsed out shampoo well.

With some models, the testers were able to halve the shower costs. Then it’s worth buying a new one. According to calculations by Stiftung Warentest, the investment costs are quickly recovered – often after just 14 showers.
