It is striking that where holiday makers previously reported massively bad luck from sun -drenched France and Italy, the bulk of requests for help now comes from cooler places such as Scandinavia. The ANWB Alarm Center notes this based on figures from 23 June to 10 August 2025.
South drops, north peaks
France remains the leader with the most breakdown reports, followed by Germany and Italy. But the numbers are falling: France notes 10 percent fewer breakdowns, Germany 5 percent and Italy 7 percent. Other sun destinations such as Hungary (-24 percent) and Croatia (-10 percent) also see a substantial decrease in Dutch people in need.
On the other hand, the northern countries scream for help. Denmark takes the crown with an increase of 13 percent in breakdown reports, followed by Norway (+6 percent) and Sweden (+5 percent). “Holidaymakers clearly opt for the fresh fjords and forests of Northern Europe,” Victor Geskes, director of the ANWB Emergency Center, signals.
“In addition, starting problems, burning dashboard lights and flat tires of the cars and campers are the most reported ailments.”
‘Top crowded around August 15’
With the holiday season in full swing, the ANWB is preparing for a new wave of reports. “We expect top crowds around August 15, when Maria Ascension is celebrated in many countries and garages are closed,” warns Geskes.
,, That can lead to a delay in assistance. Nevertheless, of course, we do everything we can to quickly help stranded travelers on their way. ”

In France, Spain and Italy, 28 ANWB roads are driving around to remedy coat of fellow countrymen. More than 1,800 holidaymakers have been helped there on the spot. In addition, the smart PHONEFIX service, where care providers repair the car remotely with the customer, already solved 4,600 breakdowns.
The camper is a striking newcomer who regularly strands this year. With an increase of 13 percent in requests for help from motor home owners, the popularity of these giants on wheels is not to be missed.
Stay ready
With a few busy weeks before the bow, the ANWB Alarm Center remains ready. “We are ready 24/7 to help holidaymakers out of the fire,” Geskes emphasizes. “Whether you are in the French sun or Norwegian cold: we ensure that you can get on your way again.”
