All sports halls in the municipality of Dongen will be closed to be on the safe side because there is a lot of ice and snow on the roofs. This involves four gymnasiums, a sports hall and a competition swimming pool. On Wednesday, the municipality of Waalwijk also decided to close all sports halls immediately, due to the large amount of ice and snow on the roofs.
The closure is a precautionary measure. According to the municipality, the structures of the sports halls and gymnasiums meet all requirements and can be used safely under normal circumstances. “But due to the exceptional weather conditions and the large amount of snow and ice on the roofs, the roofs can sag more than usual,” it says on the website of the municipality of Dongen.
The municipalities indicate that they want to guarantee the safety of athletes, visitors and employees and that they are therefore not taking any risks.
One of the closed buildings is the Kelly van Zon Gymnasium, named after the Paralympic table tennis champion from Dongen. It is not yet known when the buildings can be used again.
The sports halls are also closed in Waalwijk
The neighboring municipality of Waalwijk closed four sports halls, two gymnasiums and a gymnastics hall on Wednesday due to snow on the roofs. They will remain closed at least until Friday evening. The municipality will then see whether they can open again during the weekend.
