Another malfunction at ING: double debits after a debit card payment

Some ING customers are experiencing a malfunction on Saturday and Sunday. Customers see a double debit in their account statement after a debit card payment, according to a spokesperson for the bank.

“We are working with all our might to remedy this problem as quickly as possible,” said the ING spokesman. “There have not actually been double depreciations, but this appears to be the case in the overview. The money has not been debited twice, it is what you see that counts.”

It is a problem with the reservation of payments. Money is reserved for each payment and that reservation must be debited with the actual payment. Normally that takes seconds, according to ING.

This concerns payments made on Saturday between 12:00 and 3:30 p.m. with a card reader in, for example, shops, restaurants or petrol stations. That’s tens of thousands of transactions. “Customers saw this morning that the reservation was still there. It specifically concerns debit card payments and not ordinary transfers or those via a tap. This group should not be bothered by it,” says the spokesperson.

Since 08:00 on Sunday, the number of malfunction reports has been increasing, reaching a peak of just under a thousand complaints around 11:00 am. “We apologize for the inconvenience.”
