The premier league ice hockey has been running at full speed for a number of weeks and of course the Amsterdam Tigers are back. The club from the capital is still waiting for its first prize since 2009 and hopes that it will happen again this year thanks to a new asset: club legend John Versteeg.
The 52-year-old Versteeg played more than 700 games at the highest level, the majority of which were with the Tigers. In addition, it was The Sniper good for more than 500 goals and almost 600 assists. After 40 years on the ice, Versteeg chose to fill the vacancy of head coach at the beginning of this season. “I had to think about it for a long time, but in the end I said ‘yes’ with complete conviction.”
“We are not favorites for the title at the moment. I have to be honest about that,” says Versteeg, who has quite a few foreign forces in his selection this season. “We do indeed have a nice foreign legion. We have a Finn, a player from Luxembourg, a Latvian and also a Belarusian.”
The victory over Yeti’s Breda last weekend meant the fifth victory of the season for Versteeg and the Tigers. After six games in the Premier League, Amsterdam is now three points behind the undefeated leader Leeuwarden.
