American-Made Index 2023: Tesla leads index for US production with four models

For the fourth time, the Cars.com platform compiles the American-Made Index, which ranks all qualified vehicles that are built and purchased in the USA. This year, the first four places not only go to the same manufacturer, a German company also made it into the top 10.

• American-Made Index lists 100 vehicles in 2023
• Top 4 goes to Tesla
• The remaining top 15 only goes to foreign manufacturers, including a German company

American Made Index 2023

The American-Made Index 2023 is being compiled by Cars.com for the fourth time. The Index ranks all qualifying vehicles built and purchased in the United States. The underlying study follows the same basic guidelines as those used in 2020-2022. This year, it includes 100 vehicles that will be evaluated based on five criteria: assembly location, parts count, engine origin, transmission origin, and US manufacturing labor force. To determine the 100 vehicles listed in the index, a total of 388 vehicles were checked by Cars.com. This year, the lead in the rankings is very clear, with the top four places going to vehicles from the same automaker.

Tesla: “S3XY” occupies the first four places

Tesla is at the top of the American-Made Index for the third time in a row. This year, the US electric car manufacturer even took the top four places with its entire range, which is also known as the “S3XY models”. Tesla’s Model Y ranks first, followed by the Model 3, X and S. The fact that the Austin, Texas plant saw a significant increase in employment compared to the previous year speaks volumes for Tesla. The Model Y, which took first place, is also produced there.

While the index does not contain any groundbreaking news, as Cars.com explains, one thing is clear from the vehicles included: America is slowly becoming electrified. The index provides a “snapshot of an evolving industry that is gradually but steadily moving toward electrification,” according to the index report. In 2022, hybrid and all-electric models accounted for 14 of the then 95 vehicles in the AMI, and thus a full 15 percent. This year alone there are 14 among the top 60 and 22 overall (22 percent). Many automakers are in the process of converting their assembly lines to produce electrified vehicles or even building entirely new facilities dedicated to the manufacture of such vehicles. A change that is also urgently needed, because according to the latest surveys by Cars.com, about 39 percent of the car buyers surveyed are moving in electric car considering. 50 percent of those surveyed would consider an electric car or a hybrid vehicle if they were to buy a car in the next year.

Many places go to foreign automakers

But not only US companies like Tesla are represented in the AMI. Thanks to their production in the USA, some foreign manufacturers also find one or the other place in the index – even increasingly in the top 15. With one exception, the rest of the top 15 only have positions that go to Honda, Acura and Toyota. For those who follow the index, however, the recurrence of Honda models should come as no surprise, Cars.com says. The Japanese automaker remains prominent because of the Odyssey, Passport, Pilot and Ridgeline models, all of which are made in Alabama. The Ohio plants also contribute to the top 15 finishes with the Acura MDX, RDX, TLX and Honda Accord. It is also worth noting that the Honda Passport has a total of 75 percent American and Canadian parts. A requirement of the original AMI and a benchmark that many models were once able to achieve. In the meantime, however, it is increasingly becoming apparent that it will be difficult for most vehicles in 2023 to even reach 60 percent.

And German automobile manufacturers can also be found in the index, including VW, BMW and Mercedes-Benz. Above all, VW stands out with the ID.4 in this year’s report as an outlier at the top (6th place). The reason for this is precisely this composition of the proportion of parts, as Cars.com explains. After the ID.4 made its debut as a German vehicle in 2021, production for the models sold in the US was moved to the VW plant in Chattanooga, Tennessee. There it replaced the Passat sedan on the production line. While some variants of the ID.4 (unlike the Passat, which is 100 percent U.S./Canadian parts) are 75 percent U.S./Canadian parts, at least the powertrain is entirely U.S.-made.
