Amazon wants to close three department stores in Great Britain

The online retailer Amazon wants to close three department stores in Great Britain and relocate the employees. The British news agency PA reported on Tuesday that 1,200 jobs were affected. However, the employees should get offers at other locations. The group is said to have initiated talks about closing its locations in Hemel Hempstead near London, in Doncaster in northern England and in Gourock in western Scotland.

According to the PA report, the affected jobs are not among the 18,000 jobs that Amazon plans to cut worldwide as part of an austerity measure. One is always in the process of re-evaluating the network and adapting it to current needs, an Amazon spokesman said.

Elsewhere in the UK, the online giant plans to build two new clearance centers that will create 2,500 new jobs over the next three years. In the summer it was said that Amazon wanted to employ 75,000 people in the UK by the end of last year. (dpa)
