Amazon is adding sneakers to its “Virtual Try-on” tool. Customers in Europe can now try on shoes from selected brands virtually via the camera of their smartphone, the US retail giant announced on Monday.

The technology based on augmented reality (in German: extended reality) was first launched by Amazon in the summer to enable customers to try on sunglasses virtually. Now Amazon has developed a Computer Vision Machine Learning (CVML) system to capture customers’ position, orientation and shoe size. In addition, the ankle and the trouser design of the interested party are recorded in order to guarantee a true-to-life copy of the sneaker. Customers can use the front camera of their smartphone to see what a specific pair of shoes looks like from any angle.

The “Virtual Try-On” function can be accessed via the Amazon app or via QR code on the respective product detail page. It is also possible to photograph the virtual 3D sneaker on your own foot and share it on social media.
