LOOK. Emergency services are present en masse, many injured people are being resuscitated on the street

Around 10:20 p.m. local time, some 100,000 people gathered in the neighborhood for a huge Halloween party. The drama is said to have taken place when people started pushing from backwards while the crowd was in a narrow street. Many people lost their balance and were trampled in the chaos that followed.

Yonhap news agency previously reported that about 50 people had to be resuscitated after going into cardiac arrest. The emergency service received more than 80 calls in a short time about people with respiratory problems.

A total of 142 fire trucks and ambulances were sent to the busy area to assist the victims. Police also confirmed that dozens of people were being resuscitated on the streets of Itaewon, while many others were taken to nearby hospitals. Videos on social media show dozens of people lying on the side of the street, covered with blue plastic sheets. According to witnesses, the street was so crowded that emergency services could barely get to the scene to help the victims.

South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol has ordered an emergency meeting on the situation. Mayor Oh Se-hoon, who was visiting Europe, has cut short his trip and is flying back to Seoul as soon as possible.

An estimated 100,000 people had come to Itaewon to celebrate Halloween, the first since the corona crisis without wearing masks and keeping their distance. In images shared on social media, people complained about huge crowds earlier in the evening.
