Alpine skiing: Aicher stumbles and races undeterred into the top ten

As of: December 17, 2023 12:29 p.m

Kira Weidle and Emma Aicher made it into the top ten despite problems. But the fastest line at the Super G in Val d’Isére is an Italian woman.

The Super-G course in Val d’Isére, France, challenged the speed riders. Italy’s Federica Brignone raced fastest over the fast, winding slope. Norwegian Lie Kajsa Vickhoff took second place (+0.44 seconds). Sofia Goggia (ITA/+0.59) also made it onto the podium.

Weidle and Aicher in the top ten

Although there was no podium place for the German speed riders in the Super G, the failure of some of the favorites showed how high their performance on the demanding course was. Lara Gut-Behrami (SUI), Marta Bassino (ITA) and ski superstar Mikaela Shiffrin missed a goal and were out.

Weidle longs Christmas break here

Kira Weidle finished 13th in the downhill and just wanted to ski well. But the Starnberg native couldn’t find the right feeling for skiing again in the second race of the weekend. After her rapid ride over the rough track, she shook her head in disappointment at the finish.

I’m not completely satisfied, I couldn’t really push“, said Weidle in the ZDF interview. But, “vom skiing it’s not quite what I want yet“, the 27-year-old continues her current problems after finishing ninth. Skiing is not just about skill, but also about the mind. She wants to get rid of the pressure she is currently feeling during the Christmas break. Then”Hopefully things are looking better again in Zauchensee“.

Courageous Aicher can just avoid falling

Emma Aicher, on the other hand, still has to channel her aggressiveness into the right direction. The 20-year-old once again showed her great potential. After a mistake at the first transition, she stumbled briefly, but was just able to avoid a fall during her wild ride and get the skis back under control.

Despite losing time, she made a good turn in the snow. Only 1.91 seconds were missing from the best time. “Was a bit surprised myself” said Aicher about her avoided fall. She didn’t think much about it afterwards. “I just kept driving.” The effort was worth it. With tenth place, Aicher collected a number of World Cup points.

Teammate Katrin Hirtl-Stanggassinger joined the list of numerous failures (17).
