Almost half of North Holland municipalities have not received asylum seekers for years

21 of the 44 municipalities in North Holland have has not received any asylum seekers in the past twelve years. This is evident from research by RTV Noord.

Research by RTV Noord shows that in the past twelve years, almost one in three municipalities in the Netherlands has not received any asylum seekers. With 48 percent of municipalities, North Holland is just below Utrecht, which is at the top of the list with 13 municipalities (50 percent of the total number of municipalities).

The analysis was done on the basis of figures requested from the Central Agency for the Reception of Asylum Seekers (COA). The figures in the research concern the period between January 2012 and November 2023. Of the 342 municipalities, 111 have done nothing to accommodate asylum seekers in the past twelve years.

This concerns the North Holland municipalities of Hollands Kroon, Opmeer, Medemblik, Drechterland, Stede Broec, Edam/Volendam, Landsmeer, Oostzaan, Wormerland, Castricum, Uitgeest, Heemskerk, Bloemendaal, Heemstede, Zandvoort, Amstelveen, Blaricum, Gooise Meren and Texel. .

Under the dispersal law that will be discussed today and tomorrow in the Senate, municipalities where no shelter has been arranged may be forced to take in asylum seekers.

A spokesperson for the municipality of Stede Broec says that there is no location available there for the reception of asylum seekers. But: in almost all municipalities that do not receive refugees, there is room for Ukrainians.
