On January 1, 2024, 452,000 Dutch households will have assets of 1 million euros or more. This means that there are 17,000 more millionaire households than a year earlier. This is the conclusion of the Central Bureau of Statistics (CBS) from new wealth figures. It is the tenth year in a row that the number of millionaires has increased.
Most millionaires live in North Holland and Utrecht, but they also like to settle in Drenthe. And preferably in Noordenveld, Tynaarlo, De Wolden, Westerveld and Aa en Hunze, as the figures show. In those municipalities, 6 to almost 9 percent of households are millionaires. Tynaarlo is at the top with a percentage of 8.8.
According to CBS, you can call yourself a millionaire if you own 1 million euros or more. This includes the value of your own home and any mortgage debt.
The average wealth of millionaire households was 1.6 million euros in 2024. That means half of them have more power and the other half less. For comparison: ‘ordinary’ households have an average of 110,000 euros.
There are outliers for the top 3 percent of millionaire households. That part has assets of 10 million euros or more.
The wealth figures of private households are based on assets and debts. Assets include financial assets, bank and savings balances, securities, real estate (own home and other buildings), business assets, substantial interests and other assets. Debts include the sum of mortgage debt, student debt and other debts.
40 percent of millionaires’ largest assets consist of substantial interests. This means that they own at least 5 percent shares of a company. Business assets (assets and debts of self-employed entrepreneurs) are also included in that percentage. A quarter of the assets consists of the value of the owner-occupied home.
For almost 40 percent of millionaire households, pension benefits are the main source of income. The rest get their income from work, of which 55 percent are self-employed.
However, the statistics agency has noticed that this number has been decreasing since 2014. That year, 71 percent of working millionaires were self-employed.
